Laboratory-grown diamonds can receive independent documentation from gemological laboratories, but the document and terminology depend on the issuing laboratory and date. IGI laboratory-grown reports commonly document carat weight, color, clarity, proportions, and laboratory-grown origin. GIA's current quality-assessment service uses a different format and terminology for qualifying colorless-to-near-colorless laboratory-grown diamonds.

The purpose remains independent identification and documentation, but a current GIA assessment should not be described as if it uses the same color and clarity nomenclature as a natural-diamond grading report.

What Information Appears on a Lab Diamond Report

Laboratory-grown documents may include measurements, proportions, finish information, origin disclosure, and—depending on the laboratory and report generation—color and clarity grades or a broader quality assessment.

The document identifies the diamond as laboratory-grown. Some report formats may also describe the growth method or post-growth treatment.

This distinction ensures that the origin of the diamond is clearly documented.

GIA announced a revised service for D-to-Z laboratory-grown diamonds in 2025 and launched it on October 1, 2025. Under the current service, qualifying loose colorless-to-near-colorless laboratory-grown diamonds receive an overall Premium or Standard quality assessment instead of the color and clarity nomenclature used for natural diamonds.
