Hourglass is a newer house, but the perspective behind it was shaped over decades. Founder Justin Smith grew up around the jewelry business as the grandson of Charlotte jeweler Donald Haack and spent 13 years working within the family business before building a broader career across gemology, diamond sourcing, brokerage, international sales, and custom jewelry.
After earning his Graduate Gemologist credential, Justin went on to serve as Lead Graduate Gemologist for North America at one of the world’s leading diamond and gemstone firms and later as Global Head of Sales for another. Those years offered a very different view of the industry: how diamonds move globally, how jewelry is manufactured, how major retailers source, and where the traditional jewelry experience often succeeds or falls short.
Hourglass Diamonds grew from both sides of that experience.
It keeps what remains valuable about the traditional personal-jeweler model: relationships, accountability, craft, and long-term trust. It combines that foundation with global trade expertise, contemporary design, cutting-edge technology, transparency, and a more thoughtful way of guiding clients through important purchases.
